Rawalpindi, commonly known as Pindi, is the fourth-largest city in Pakistan by population. It is located in the Punjab province, adjacent to Pakistan's capital city, Islamabad, with which it forms a metropolitan area known as the "Twin Cities."

The city sits on the Pothohar Plateau at an elevation of about 508 meters (1,667 ft), and is surrounded by the Margalla Hills to the north. Rawalpindi serves as the headquarters of the Pakistan Army and plays a vital strategic, commercial, and cultural role in the country.

History & Background

Rawalpindi has a history that spans thousands of years. Archaeological excavations indicate that the area was inhabited as early as the time of the ancient Gandhara civilization. Buddhist monasteries and stupas dating back to that era have been discovered in and around the region.

The modern city traces its name to the village of "Rawal," which existed during the rule of the Ghakkars in the 16th century. After being destroyed by Mongol invasions, it was restored by Jhanda Khan, a Ghakkar chief, who renamed it Rawalpindi in 1493.

Under the Sikh Empire in the early 19th century, Rawalpindi grew as a trade and military hub. It was annexed by the British in 1849 after the Second Anglo-Sikh War and soon became one of the largest garrison towns of British India. The Treaty of Rawalpindi, ending the Third Anglo-Afghan War, was signed here in 1919.

After the independence of Pakistan in 1947, Rawalpindi served as the country's interim capital from 1959 until Islamabad was completed in the 1960s. Today, it remains the General Headquarters (GHQ) of the Pakistan Armed Forces.
